With such a promising debut in 2010, we’ve all been wondering what the hell happened to the Western Mass indie pop five-piece Dom. Turns out that quite a bit has happened, including a change in both name and musical direction.
Paying homage to the local radio station of the same name, Worcester native and frontman Dom ditched his band and its critically acclaimed lo-fi sound for new electro-pop project Kiss 1O8. In an interview with Exclaim earlier this month, he explained the reasoning behind this self-described “total departure”:
“[I’m] takin’ a break from Dom for now,” he says. “Dom was a lot of fun for a while. [It] was my first ‘band,’ and it took me all over the world on a wild adventure. Unfortunately, music labels and industry people really fucked up my good time. Once it stopped being fun, I decided it would be unfair to me and the people who enjoy my music to try to force something that I wasn’t feeling. So I banked all the Dom tracks and started making electronic music again.”
While the disbanding of Dom is a total bummer, y’all don’t have to wait much longer to hear what he’s been up to all this time – Kiss 1O8’s HYPERFANTASY XL is set to release on Halloween. But if you can’t wait ’til then, hold yourself over by listening to “H o t . l i m i t” below.
