LA-based alternative artist Beck surprised fans today by announcing a signing with Capitol Records and the release of his first new album since 2008’s Modern Guilt.
The new album, Morning Phase, is set to drop sometime in February 2014. In a press release, the singer/songwriter describes the upcoming record as a “companion piece” to 2002’s acclaimed Sea Change that “harkens back to the stunning harmonies, song craft and staggering emotional impact of that record, while surging forward with infectious optimism.” It’s also featuring the same artists who performed on Sea Change and currently join him live – Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Joey Waronker, Smokey Hormel, Roger Joseph Manning Jr., and Jason Falkner.
Morning Phase follows the release of Beck’s Song Reader last December, which contained sheet music for 20 original, unrecorded songs. This project inevitably sparked a life of its own, which hit the Somerville Theater last February.
Although the complete track listing, exact release date, and other Morning Phase details are still a mystery, get a taste of what’s to come by checking out “Gimme” below.
