You read that headline correctly. There are solar-powered cell-phone-charging benches popping up on the Boston Common this week, and not only that, but they’re slowly showing up around other spots in the city, too.
Changing Environments, a MIT Media Lab spin-off, creates smart urban furniture that works to combine comfort, practicality, and ingenuity in their products. That’s where Soofa comes in. According to their website, Soofa is a solar-powered bench that provides you with free outdoor charging outlets and location-based information, like the air quality and noise levels at that specific site. The three women who created Soofa wanted to get people out of their homes to explore an increasingly smarter and sustainable city. It’s safe to say they did a job well done.
Head over to Soofa’s website to see a map that shows the current locations of all the charging benches in Boston. Bonus points if Allston Pudding is the first site you hit up when you’re chilling on one.
