We are excited to present the video trailer for Dear Young Rocker! Once a young rocker herself, Chelsea Ursin of Banana (you might recognize them from their Allston Pudding Session) has taken a written memoir and transformed it into an audio project. Ursin is a long time musician, who has also spent four years working to empower youth through music as a volunteer at Girls Rock Camp Boston. Now diving headfirst into the world of podcasting, Ursin tackles all of the recording, production and sound design, as well as making all of the music for the show herself.
Dear Young Rocker follows a young Chelsea through the uncomfortable transition from middle school to high school, her first band, and her start with the bass guitar. Ursin explores the highs and lows of adolescence, and everything that comes along with navigating the rough waters of her teen years, and her relationship with music as a comfort through it all. Turbulent friendships, accidental boyfriends, band drama, and the experience encountering someone else’s spit for the first time are all refracted through teenage Chelsea’s lense, and recounted in cringeworthy detail. By refusing to shy away from the uncomfortable, Ursin paints a raw, honest portrait of what it’s like to grow up with anxiety, and brings to light the thoughts that most of us have had, but would never say out loud.
Months of hard work and trial and error on Ursin’s part pay off in a big way, and the show has become more than just a memoir. Dear Young Rocker creates a space for young weirdos, loners, and people struggling with social anxiety see to their experiences reflected, and take solace in the fact that they’re not alone. Though we mostly hear things from young Chelsea’s point of view, current Chelsea pops in every now and again to remind her that her experiences are all difficult but necessary parts of growing up, and to keep on rocking.
The video trailer also features some of the Boston music scene’s brightest young rockers Em Spooner of Squitch, and Kade Thibodeau of Lydia Deetz, as well as some Girls Rock Camp alumni.
You can listen to Dear Young Rocker on iTunes, Spotify, and anywhere else you listen to podcasts. Follow Chelsea on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube to keep up to date with the show. Listeners can look forward to interviews with other musicians in season 2!
