Soul-pop eight-piece Lawrence played the first of two sold-out shows at the Sinclair last Tuesday night, with support from The Huntertones and Kat Wright. The Huntertones kicked off the show at 8:30 with a high-energy instrumental funk set, with the horn section in the spotlight. They brought an enormous amount of energy to the room that instrumental bands often need to make up for their lack of vocals. Next up was Vermont-based Kat Wright with her own seven-piece backing band, The Indomitable Soul Band. They played a lower-volume blue-eyed soul set, preparing the crowd for a wide variety of energy levels to come from the headliners.

Finally, Lawrence walked on stage just after 10:00pm, led by siblings Clyde and Gracie Lawrence sharing lead vocals. They played an incredible set and had the crowd moving from the first note they played. A very interactive band, Gracie sang straight to the front row, encouraging fans to sing along to every word, and the horn section jumped into and paraded through the crowd during a particularly memorable cover of Sean Paul’s “Get Busy.” Lawrence took complete control over the crowd of willing subjects and kept an impressive hold all the way through their encore, which ended with a cover of “Natural Woman,” featuring Wright on vocals with Gracie.
