Band on Band Review: halfsour

halfsour celebrates the release of their new album Sticky tonight at Great Scott with a stellar cast of supporting bands: Lilith, Mini Dresses, and Anna Altman. The album pretty much speaks for itself, but each band gave their thoughts on it anyway. You can stream the album ahead of its official release on Disposable America and Fire Talk on Friday thanks to our friends at Post-Trash. Read what the bands had to say and check the details of tonight’s release show below!

Anna Altman

Aside from being one of the most excellent U.S bands to tour with, Halfsour churns out catchy melodic rock songs that pack punches you weren’t ready for – but will crave long after the show is over. On “Blurred Camera Phone”, Zoë sings, “Black and white blurred camera phone. Pictures of my life as meant to go, or as I’ve been told”, wherein the listener feels compelled to chant back, “FILL THE SCORECARD, MAIL IT IN. IS THAT HOW ITS DONE? BUT NO ONE KNOWS WHO YOU ARE OR WHAT YOU HOLD”. This section contains, by far, one of the most contagious earworms on the whole album; but other than cultivating melodies that really linger with the listener, Halfsour’s finest strength is their teamwork as collaborators and as performers. Drummer Travis Hagan always manages to move the song forward, never drifting too far from Zoë’s Klon Clone-affected bass, while Matt Mara wails on his guitar filtered through copious overdrive pedals. Sticky, their sophomore album, delivers. Period. Whether you’re listening to it at home or watching them live, do so with two Champagne of Beers in each hand. If you don’t find yourself singing along, I don’t want to know you.”

Mini Dresses

Sticky is the ultimate halfsour record! The guitars trade off laser-focused riffs with spacey squall, the drums are immersive and expansive, the bass is muscular and steady, and Zoë’s voice is right in the thick of it all, reassuring like a close friend even as she’s describing moments of communication breakdown, wistful longing, or extreme skepticism (sometimes all of these things at once!). Whether she’s deadpan egging you on in “Big Teeth” or gently harmonizing with herself à la “Paper Window,” there’s something undeniably captivating about her vocal delivery. These folks continually prove themselves to be a Boston institution, and with this new album, halfsour really *sticks* the landing (sorry, had to do it).”

Lilith

Sticky is sooo vibey! I feel like so many of these songs remind me of something that I can’t quite pinpoint, which is a quality I’m always trying to dial in as a songwriter. I LOVE and RESPECT their pop songwriting structures–totally out here living for their big choruses. Definitely going to toss some of these choice tracks onto my summer playlists! I’m stoked to see how they do this record live IRL!!”

See all of these bands play tonight at Great Scott, or maybe they’ll just read these reviews live? IDK TBH
