Less than a year since its first two-day showing at Government Center, Boston Calling announced an almost-complete lineup for its third festival and first three-day effort in downtown Boston, including heavy-hitting headliners like Jack Johnson, Death Cab For Cutie, and Modest Mouse. This time, BC will absorb an entire long weekend from Friday, May 23rd through Sunday the 25th, and hearkens back to last year’s May show in its booking sensibility– after a hip-hop and EDM-heavy September show (think Kendrick Lamar and Major Lazer), this spring takes the festival back to its roots.
With one major act yet to be announced (dare we hope Outkast?), it’s the strongest bill yet with an even balance of crowd-pleasers like current chart-toppers Bastille and Frank Turner as well as pleasant surprises like Kurt Vile, Brand New, Cass McCombs, Warpaint, and Jenny Lewis. This time around, local bands Tigerman WOAH! and Magic Man are being featured as the local acts, a spot that acts like Bearstronaut, You Won’t, and Bad Rabbits have filled in the past. The lineup was announced after a city-wide scavenger-hunt gave ten lucky treasure-hunters the list of acts on exclusive vinyl, proving that the minds over at Crash Line Productions are aiming to create big-league buzz in a market over-saturated with festivals.
Is the lineup Coachella or Primavera? Not quite yet, but in a city still new to major festivals, the spring 2014 Boston Calling lineup is nothing short of exciting. Check out the full lineup here:
