Every once in a while, a song will come out of nowhere and turn things around for a minute. This happened just a few weeks ago when Beacon, New Yorkers Dumb Talk sent over their album “Together Every Night.” The BandCamp release, uploaded so that stand-out track “Gloss” is played first, proved to be a true gem in an otherwise crowded inbox, and I found myself hitting repeat as the sun started to set way too early in the afternoon. It felt nice.
Dumb Talk put together their own list of Songs That Make Life Less Shitty, which you can listen to on a shitty crowded bus, or right before digging out your shitty car, or maybe over a cup of shitty coffee at work:
This song reminds me how nice it is to make out with someone. I’m not as hot as Andre 3k, but I like to think that I understand what he’s saying.
“Tears of Rage” – The Band
I imagine myself walking my future daughter down the isle during their wedding ceremony. And not hating myself.
“All I Wanna Do” – The Beach Boys
This one makes me want to hug my girlfriend and believe that monogamy is within my grasp.
“Somebody’s Baby” – Jackson Browne
It’s bullshit. Every girl belongs to someone else.
“Basement Scene” – Deerhunter
The melody makes me feel like no matter how much I fuck up, everything’s going to be okay. That might just be the tone of Bradford Cox.
“Without You” – Harry Nilsson
It makes me forget. For three minutes and fifteen seconds I can just discard myself of everything.
“Wishin’ And Hopin” – Dusty Springfield
I heard this one first in a Julia Robert’s movie that my mom made me watch. It’s really comforting event though it’s just about some girl holding onto her man. It feels like my mom is hugging me.
“Shangri-La” – The Kinks
We’re not really into our lives.
“Cold Morning Light” – Todd Rundgren
This makes me feel like it’s okay to be completely alone for the rest of my fucking life. Thanks Todd.
“Paperhouse” – Can
Sometimes you just have to watch things happen. And you just wish that maybe a wish would come true (;)) My family is figuratively dead.
