Good Vibes With K.Flay At Royale

Last Wednesday, K.Flay brought her newest album, Solutions, to Royale. She was supported by Your Smith and Houses for a night of vibrant, punchy music.

Solo artist Your Smith, also known as Caroline Smith, warmed up the crowd with a spirited set and a playful call and response to remind everyone, “not my Smith, but Your Smith!” She was followed by the Chicago-based band Houses, who played a lively set of their own as the crowd’s anticipation for K.Flay continued to build.

When the headliner finally made her way on stage, a pre-recorded monologue commented on the necessity of forgoing despair in the face of overwhelming problems and looking for solutions instead. To emphasize this assertion, K.Flay pointedly began her set with a song about climate change, “Not In California,” followed by “Bad Vibes,” a track that decries the celebration of negativity. The overall mood of the performance was infectiously energetic, with an interlude of acoustic performances including “Nervous,” and “Can’t Sleep,” as well as a cover of Liz Phair’s “Fuck and Run” to punctuate the otherwise boundless vigor. By the end of the evening, K.Flay had treated the audience to a performance of the Solutions LP in its entirety, and capped it all off with the popular “Blood In The Cut.” If the response from the crowd was any indication, it appears that good vibes truly overtook the night after all.
