On the last stop of their tour, Great Grandpa rallied Boston fans to ONCE in Somerville. With a two-thirds local bill made up of Northampton touring partners, DUMP HIM, and Boston locals, Really From, the venue was filled with folks familiar with all three of the night’s acts, making for a packed weeknight show.
Really From got things started, and the audience immediately tuned in as the band’s dynamic set built up the tension in the room, culminating in the explosive closer, “Sleeptalk.” As the night continued, the energy from Really From’s set carried over to DUMP HIM’s faster, more upbeat punk performance. Having just released their first full length album, Dykes to Watch Out For, in August, DUMP HIM’s setlist included many new tracks such as opening song “Puritan” and the album’s title track. Their set also held a few surprises, including a Wipers cover with drummer Ian St. George taking over as vocal lead, and a guest appearance by Zach Weeks, credited with recording, mixing, and playing the guitar solo on the band’s LP.
Closing out the night, Great Grandpa took to the stage to the tune of “AC/VC,” Neil Cicierega’s mashup of “Back in Black” by AC/DC and “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton. Their latest album, Four of Arrows, had only been released a few weeks prior, so fans were excited to hear new songs like “Digger” and “Mostly Here” in a live setting for the first time. The band took the listeners on a journey through the album’s more intimate and intense moments alike, all of which were embraced by the crowd from beginning to end. At one point, guitarist Dylan Hanwright joked about the amount of downtime between songs because of all of the different things the group played in, but if anything, fans were left excitedly anticipating each and every song until the end of the night.
