Guestlist: Beach Fossils

beach fossilsBrooklyn-based lo-fi quartet Beach Fossils are heading to Boston tomorrow, playing The Middle East Downstairs with support from our pals in Young Adults and BOYTOY. Because they’re so totally stoked, frontman Dustin Payseur put together a playlist for your listening pleasures. Check it out below:

Alejandro Jodorowsky – Drink it
Jodorowsky collaborated on the Holy Mountain soundtrack with Don Cherry and Ron Frangipane. I personally think it’s be greatest film soundtrack I’ve ever heard. Every song on it is great so it was hard to narrow down to one pick.

Napalm Death – The Crucifixion Of Possessions
This is from the Bullshit Detector compilation released on Crass Records in 1980. A lot of deep cuts by bands who never released anything else are on this record. But this song in particular is a good representation of early Napalm Death before they went full on thrash/grind. This track reminds me of Subhumans.

Kevin Ayers – Lady Rachel
Kevin Ayers is one of my favorite songwriters. I personally like his solo music (and Robert Wyatt’s) more than the stuff with Soft Machine. His songwriting is similar to John Cale, Syd Barrett and Leonard Cohen, but he really has his own unique sound. It puts me in a heavy mood.

S.P.K. – Contact
Not much needs to be said about this one. Industrial pioneers, insanely nihilistic and forward thinking. 24/7 it doesn’t matter what’s going, on I’m always in the mood for some S.P.K.

Pearls Before Swine – The Surrealist Waltz
Speaking of bands I’m always in the mood for… You could blindly put on any song from one of their 60’s records and it’s going to make you want to get naked and lie down on your floor for hours.

Super Heroines – Convicts
A lot of deathrock bands can start to sound the same after a while, but Super Heroines had something special, they were fucking tight. They would have been so good to see live back in their heyday.

Anthony Braxton – To Composer John Cage
First record released of solo alto playing. Recorded back in 1969, this shit still has some serious and undeniable human energy. This is another track I could put on feeling any mood and it would fit just right. I actually love to listen to free-jazz when I’m totally stressed out or pissed, it makes me feel so calm.

Essential Logic – Collecting Dust **Note: This Jawn Ain’t On The Youtube**
Maybe the best post-punk band ever (aside from This Heat). Bold statement? Whatever. Lora Logic was the original saxophone player in X-Ray Spex and wrote some of the best songs I’ve ever heard in my life. I love every single Essential Logic song.

Gareth Williams & Marie Currie – Breast Stroke
Speaking of This Heat, Gareth Williams played bass and sang for them. Afterwards he put out an incredible record with his friend Marie Currie and the outcome feels so intimate and personal. This record is gem after gem. I could die happy after writing an album like this.

And One – Techno Man
This song feels like you’re walking around a dark industrial dance club in neon lights with a mirror shattered on your face but who cares because you’re really out there and it feels right.
