Guestlist: Diarrhea Planet

Have you ever been to Diarrhea Planet? We haven’t, but we’ve been to a Diarrhea Planet show, and it was one of the most enjoyable evenings of all time, much like a visit to Diarrhea Planet wouldn’t be. Anyway, Casey Weissbuch of Diarrhea Planet put together a #gnarly playlist for us in honor of the shredfest that’s about to go down at Cambridge’s TT the Bear’s Place, featuring a few tracks from their bill-mates Lovely Bad Things and California X. Pregame their show tonight by listening to these fine tunes, and be sure to tell Casey what a fine mixtape maker he is tonight!

Commentary:

1. “I’m The Leader of the Gang (I Am)” by Gary Glitter – This is a great song to set up gear on stage to.  Undeniably catchy as long as you ignore Gary Glitter’s rather dark history.  It sounds like a party at all times.
2. “Semi-Charmed Life” by Third Eye Blind – We all thought Emmett was joking with his love of TEB but when we realized he was serious, we also realized how much we love them.  This song is an unstoppable classic.
3. “Head In The Ceiling Fan” by Title Fight – This one is definitely a more recent van jam insta-classic.  Good introspective driving song too, especially for fall…..the whole tone of the song sets that mood.  Mainly, we’re all just big fans of what this band has been doing lately.
4. “Don’t Save Me” by Haim – The other day one of us tried to play the new Haim record back to back in one drive and it didn’t really work out, because someone else didn’t want us to get burnt out on it being such an amazing album.  I’m not gonna say we AREN’T working on a cover of this song to record…
5. “Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle” by Nirvana – This one keeps coming up on my iPod when I’m driving the van and I continue to realize what an amazing track it is.  This is also perfect timing as In Utero just saw its giant anniversary reissue.
6. “Master of Nothing” by Balloon Pants – Balloon Pants are probably one of the only bands around right now that are playing real rocknroll, which is mind blowing in itself.  This song is a killer track no matter what the mood or occasion, it always gets the party going.  You’d never think a band from the middle of nowhere Ohio could be so good.
**editor’s note: this jawn isn’t on spotify**
7. “Pond Rot” by California X – I’ve been sticking this song on van-ride playlists since the California X record came out.  We’re incredibly lucky to have them playing the upcoming show at TT The Bear’s in Cambridge with us.  It’s such a heavy track with so many perfect guitarmonies and melodies.
8. “Honeycomb Coccoon” by The Lovely Bad Things – This is the band we’re currently on tour with and it must be noted that this track would be on here regardless of us knowing how wonderful the people in this band are or anything of that sort.  Plain and simple, this song’s a total ripper.
9. “Tea Lights” by Lower Dens – This is kind of my post-show-drive-to-where-ever-we’re-sleeping-wind-down-song and it’s really perfect for that.  Really mellow song from an album (Twin-Hand Movement) that’s probably one of my favorites to come out in the last 10 years.  If you slept on that release, I suggest checking it out ASAP.
10. “Rump Shakin’ Garbanzo Beans” by Dr. Pepper Blues Band – The only song that could complete this playlist, or any other one we’d make for that matter.  This song is always the only way to end a playlist for us with a huge singalong from everyone in the van.  This is another one that you may have slept on, but if so go check it out now.
