Local trio Krill have become a true favorite of ours over the past year. Their debut LP Alam No Hris, although rough around the edges, brought true songwriting sincerity to garage rock, and a far right-brained approach to song-structure. Now we’re geting our first taste of their follow-up release, Lucky Leaves, due out in June. “Never a Joke,” the second track from the album that was recorded at Silent Barn in Brooklyn by Ava Luna’s Carlos Hernandez and Julian Fader, is a dark bass-chunked groove. Their anxious brand of rock is translated brilliantly on the track, with Aaron Ratoff’s vibrant guitar calamities perfectly complementing the repetition of, “It was never a joke to make someone feel zero.” It’s what I love most about Krill. Their almost nonchalant display of pathos conjures up emotions, but they make those emotions seem rather simple, almost meaningless, which in turn makes you feel almost as uncomfortable as they sound. It’s an experience you need to hear to believe.
Lucky Leaves will be out digitally on June 25th, but you can pre-order the whole album on a USB drive that will be hand-packaged embedded in a ball of Mozzarella cheese. This requires a bit of a donation, but it will go towards helping the band scrap up enough change to release this thing physically as well. So basically, it’s a good investment. The way things are shaping up, Krill are going to have a tremendous summer ahead of them. I couldn’t be more psyched for their album, and local Boston folks should look out for a number of summer shows to boot. Listen now.
