INTERVIEW: CHATTIN’ IT UP WITH FRANK HURRICAYNE

Hurricanes of love_0mega

Frank Hurricayne is the highly animated, always positive, very talented frontman of psych-folk outfit Hurricanes of Love. Locally, he was once Jamaica Plain’s top homie and a regular at Whitehaus. Since his days in Boston, however, he has spread his infectious personality all across the nation, whether it’s playing with the Hurricanes of Love, telling crazy stories, or hiking mountainous trails. Seems like you could go anywhere in the US and hear a story of some friendly bearded dude who came through with his guitar and caused some heavenly madness. That man is Frank Hurricayne, and with Hurricane’s of Love, he will be coming through town again to play Middle East Upstairs on 4/18 with Kinski, William Tyler, and Pray For Sound in a show put together by the good folks at Boston Hassle. Check it out and keep your ears open for a new release from Hurricanes of Love, coming soon on Feeding Tube Records.

AP: You’re a songwriter, rapper, storyteller, and all around entertainer. How did you first get interested in performing? When did you start taking your talents on the road?

Frank: Ever since I was a young player I have always enjoyed telling stories and keeping things interesting, about as far back as I can remember. I started travelin and playin like 3 and a half years ago!

Hurricanes of Love on album are mainly a psychedelic-folk project, but seems to draw on a number of different influences. In what ways does this come out when you perform live? How does improvisation come into play?

F: There’s a lot of improvisation involved in my live shows, a lot of gangsta talk

Is there a particular Hurricanes of Love track, album, or project that you’re most proud of?

F: I’m most psyched on my new record that is coming out soon on Feeding Tube Recs!!

Among many other things, you’re known to be an avid hiker. Is the Appalachian Trail kind to a musician? I know a lot of people who do the trail adopt a walking name. Do you have one, or is it Frank Hurricayne all the way? Have you ever encountered any evil spirits on the trails?

F: It’s really cool to be a musician on the trail cause peeps need to hear music out there and they’re all really psyched and receptive. My trail name is MANIMAL and I definitely came across a few evil spirits out there, but mostly the holiest vibes.

Hurricanes of Love are part of the Whitehaus Family. The spirit of Whitehaus has continued to live on in Boston, but what role did it play for you as a musician and a creative person in general?

F: The Whitehaus is rockin hard as ever right now, and it inspired me SO MUCH and gave me so much opportunity to do holy thangs!!

There have been a lot of discouraging things to happen to Boston’s creative culture as of late. Could you give us a brief Frank Hurricayne lesson on staying positive?

F: No matter how things go, you gotta keep flowin and have a fun time and make sure shit is poppin off at all times

You are the voice behind the legendary S.O.P. rap. In all of your travels, have you encountered any cuisine equally as heavenly?

F: Yeah, I have. L and B Spumoni Gardens in Brooklyn is a spiritual temple of dwaggage, Of course the holy tacos and burritos of the west coast, this burrito spot in Brooklyn called Mallys is also a lifechanging joint

What’s to come next from Hurricanes of Love? New album coming soon?

F: YEAH!! I’ve got a lot of new stuff comin out, a new double vinyl comin out, new tapes, ITS OFF DA CHAIN!!
