Can we take a second to recognize how flooded Boston is with free shows? To clarify, I’m not complaining – it’s incredible. Converse has been giving us monthly Rubber Tracks gigs and last week Vans hosted three incredible nights at the Middle East. Now please make room for Radio BDC bringing back it’s +1 Series this Thursday with Cayucas – RSVP here.
Cayucas is an indie pop band from Santa Monica with indisputable surfy-vibes. Their debut album, Bigfoot, was released last year under Secretly Canadian and the band is aiming to record a follow up record this summer. Allston Pudding caught up with Cayucas’ Zach Yudin this afternoon.
AP: You’re on the road with Young the Giant right now, how has that been going?
ZY: It’s been really good actually; we’re in Baltimore today. It’s been great so far, we’ve been finding a lot of new fans. A majority of Young the Giant fans don’t know us, it feels like we have been able to convert quite a few Cayucas fans.
AP: Good to hear! How did the pairing with Young the Giant come about anyway?
ZY: Well basically we were looking for a tour a few months ago to join and we were in that stage where you apply for opening slots and I think a few of the Young the Giant guys were already Cayucas fans. So when it came down to it and they had to choose a band they chose us.
AP: Have you noticed, either on your headlining tour last year or this supporting tour, that certain cities are strong for Cayucas?
ZY: Hmmm…there are the obvious ones like Los Angeles, New York and Chicago have all been great for us. But there have been some surprises for us, Atlanta was surprisingly a great spot for us. That and Portland and Denver were both places where our expectations were really exceeded.
AP: That must be such a great feeling!
ZY: It’s weird to play a show in Atlanta or some place and have a fan base there in a city you’ve never even been to before.
AP: Right, right. You’re in a brand new place and somehow everyone there knows exactly who you are.
ZY: Yeah, it’s pretty strange.
AP: How did this show with RadioBDC come about?
ZY: We were planning the headlining dates as this Young the Giant tour wraps up and this was an opportunity to do something with a cool radio station. We had the day open, it was actually supposed to just be a day off in New York City, so hopefully it turns out to be a fun show.
AP: Oh man, I hope we make it worth your while then.
ZY: *chuckles* Yeah, right? I’m counting on you.
AP: Okay, okay, I’ll be right up there in front, you’ll know exactly who I am.
ZY: I’m holding you to this.
AP: You guys tour a lot but do you still get chances to go out and see shows?
ZY: Yeah, yeah. We had some time in Los Angeles before this tour and I got a chance to see Father John Misty and Washed Out. I think those were the only two I saw though.
AP: Great choices nonetheless!
ZY: I’m hoping to get some more time off soon to go see stuff. I mean, the thing is, when you’re on tour you still get to see a lot. When we get to play a festival we get to see ten bands that we love and you kind of check them all off your list at once.
AP: And speaking of festivals, I was psyched to see you guys added to the Governor’s Ball lineup this year!
ZY: Yes! The lineup is great and it’s in New York. I love New York. I think we’re also going to try and plan a short headlining tour around the East Coast right around that time. I’m really looking forward to it, are you going?
AP: I am, actually! I went last year as well and with this lineup and my proximity to New York, I really couldn’t say no.
ZY: You really can’t!
Come on Boston, get down to The Black Rose this Thursday and let the sweet sounds of Cayucas take you some place much warmer – RSVP here. I’ll see you there!
