This is our friend from Berklee, BIRN!
What are your station’s goals?
There are a couple of goals. One is to be at the center of all the creative energy going on here at Berklee. There are so many talented artists and thinkers here, and some really incredible people visit and perform here throughout a school year. We want to share as much of that energy and knowledge as often as we can. Secondly, we want to make sure the students that work at the station have a great experience.
How did BIRN get started?
People had been asking why Berklee didn’t have a radio station for a very long time. The station started as the “internet radio club” in 2003 by students under the guidance of the Dean of Music Technology. By 2004 we were broadcasting pre-recorded shows inside the college’s firewall.
Our first facilities were built in 2006, which allowed us to broadcast shows featuring live DJs for the first time. Our current facilities opened in May of 2007. This was a great step for us because the new facilities were connected to Café 939, a 200 person, professional venue on campus. This allowed the station to begin broadcasting bands live as they performed in the venue. We now broadcast up to 4 live concerts a week while school is in session.
What does college radio mean to you?
College radio has always been a place that plays music that’s relatable and listenable. The variety that college radio has is a much needed relief from the same ten songs that get cycled through on mainstream radio stations. It has always been the place that played the music I wanted to listen to and that I could relate to. It is a needed alternative to the mainstream.
