What does your company do?
Disposable America is an independent record label, zine publisher and button maker based in Allston, MA. We’ve released a handful of cassettes and records over the past two years, with plans to put out a few more in the coming months. If you’re not from the Boston, you’ve probably never heard of Disposable America. Hell, even if you live in Allston there’s a pretty solid chance this is the first you’ve heard or seen from us before right now. That’s fine, I understand.
How did Disposable America get started?
Disposable America started mid-2012 as strictly a button-making business, but the label’s first cassette, Maura’s Me and My Friends, came out under the same name in August 2012. Other bands we’ve released include Orca Orca, Funeral Advantage, Cave Needles, Kevin King, Caténine, Ghost Thrower and Cripple and Casino.
Why do you do it?
DA was born from boredom, but quickly snowballed into whatever it is still shaping up to be now. I’m still not really sure why I do it, but I’ve always just figured “why not?” It gives me something to keep myself occupied with.
Who are some of your favorite bands?
Q And Not U, Black Eyes, Elvis Costello, Infinity Girl, Dilute, Post Teens, Drake, Modern Lovers, The B-52s, Dinosaur Jr. Ask me again in a few weeks, a few of those will probably have changed.
What is your favorite food spot in Boston?
I don’t know. My gut instinct is to say Big Daddy’s Hot Dog Stand in Copley Square, but that’s just because I’m on a big summertime hotdog kick right now. Pretty much anywhere with a good club sandwich.
