Jacob Collier’s otherworldly talent came to the Royale this March to promote the release of his latest album, DJesse Vol. 1. The album is the first of a four-part series, which Collier explained is separated by musical style. His set blended songs from Vol. 1 with older classics such as “Hideaway,” which remains one of his most popular YouTube videos to date. Though a multi-instrumentalist himself, Collier brought along four other absurdly talented individuals to accompany him on tour. The band consisted of Collier on vocals, bass, drums, and keys; Robin Mullarkey on vocals, bass, and keys; Christian Euman on percussion; and Moro on vocals, keys, guitar, and percussion.
The presence of these other musicians allowed Collier to direct part of his attention to the crowd rather than focusing solely on playing, which made for an engaging and lively show. During the encore, Collier led the audience in singing along to The Beach Boys’ “In My Room,” followed by a three part harmony of Bill Withers’ “Lean on Me.” By the end of the night, Collier’s performance transcended all expectations and brought pure wonder to the Royale.
