Jakals, More Tongues Than Teeth, Troll 2, Miele
Jakals is on tour, coming to the Great Scott this Thursday, January 17th, packing with them New York-based band More Tongues Than Teeth and two Boston mainstays, Troll 2 and Miele. It will be their fourth stop on a tour through New England in support of their August 2018 EP, Bat Brains.
The distinct pairing of frontwoman Katie Solomon’s undulating, aching vocals with fuzzy guitars reminiscent of 90’s grunge immediately grabs your attention. The second of six songs on Bat Brains, “Trauma Hoarding,” paints a bloody picture of a bat and a broom on the first floor of the storyteller’s childhood home. The line “I cannot clean anything up” repeats in a heart-rending melancholy driven home by a hammering staccato of electric guitars and percussion. Jakals has a knack for laying bare the unmentionable, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the rawness of Bat Brains. It’s an album for those dark nights of the soul.
A self-proclaimed “genre mash of indie trash,” More Tongues Than Teeth is bound to tickle the taste buds of punk, indie, folk, and post-hardcore fans alike. The song “Safety First” is an apt example of their delicious genre-concoction. It was written in response to Trump’s travel ban of last year and the support the ban received from the Christian right. Its influences are unmistakably folk, but with a punk political sensibility that makes you want to stomp your boots, be they cowboy or Doc Marten.
With the bluegrass soul punk vibe of Troll 2 and Miele’s signature blend of mystical melodies and heavy rock, this promises to be a night for the books.
