Today, the remaining members of legendary Boston band The Pixies have issued the following statement:

We are sad to say that Kim Deal has decided to leave the Pixies. We are very proud to have worked with her on and off over the last 25 years. Despite her decision to move on, we will always consider her a member of the Pixies, and her place will always be here for her. We wish her all the best.

The Pixies have toured on and off over the past 5 years, but Deal had most recently been on tour with The Breeders, who have reunited to celebrate the 20th anniversary of 1993’s Last Splash.

The remaining members of the Pixies have not commented on what their plan is for a bassist going forward, but it does seem from their comments that the band will indeed continue. Regardless, this is unfortunate news. Somebody like Kim Deal is not easily replaced.
