Lawn On D Opening Celebration

On Friday, ed find South Boston revealed its newest public park and music venue, site The Lawn on D, right behind the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center and run by the very same people.

The Lawn is designed to be something for everyone: during the opening, the sidewalks were paved with comic strips by local artists, there was a covered tent with a bar and music stage, an area for food trucks to park on one end, and another open-air festival-type stage on the other. In between, there are lawn chairs, bocce ball, a demo of an artsy swing set, and open fields for frisbee, et al.

The goal is to have national touring acts play with local acts filling the space between. For the months of September and October, Make Music Boston will be presenting live music on Thursdays and Fridays at 5pm. On September 19, Bowery Presents will showcase a festival with a TBA lineup.

This space comes on the tails of developing hotels and an office complex across the street, soon to cover up a fenced off construction area, making South Boston a destination in addition to Boston proper.

The initial celebration had a speech from Jim Rooney, Mayor Walsh, and State Representative Nick Collins, followed by music from Jenny Dee and the Deelinquints, a kids band that played the open air stage.

Other musicians from the weekend include: Youth DJs Mmmmaven, Lyle Brewer, Danielle Miraglia, and Stacey Peasley Band.
