John Lutkevich has been on our radar from some time. From his days in lower Allston, to an stint in sunny Los Angeles, to his knack for finding New York’s best dollar slices as a newfound Brooklynite, it seems the man behind Soft Fangs has finally found the attention he deserves. And not from the guy behind the counter at Dominos. In the past week Lutkevich’s new work has found air time on a list of big-time music blogs, highlighting his airy take on home recording and the beautiful downheartedness of his recent single, “Dead Friends” off Seagreen Records.
Once frontman of Boston’s Devil and a Penny, Lutkevich has long employed a sense of aloofness to his music. There’s a distance to his observations, allowing listeners to see the world through a haze of acoustic guitar and Lutkevich’s exquisitely fragile voice. The combination makes for some blissful sort of gloom, the kind of songs best saved for a long walk on a rainy day or the days following a breakup, while you hug your body into itself and embrace melancholy with the bedroom light on. After all, sadness is good in moderation.
Now here’s something to be happy about: Check Soft Fangs EP release show this Monday, November 24th, at Great Scott alongside Strange Mangers, Funeral Advantage and Holiday Music. Grab your ticket and listen to Lutkevich’s “Dead Friends” below.
