There is a restless spirit in all of us. Some of us tame it, settling down in one place and building a full life. Others give into that desire for exploration and spend their years traveling and seeing the world around them. The latter is the case for budding folk-americana musician Noah G. Fowler.
Growing up in suburban Pennsylvania, Noah has found himself living on Prince Edward Island, Allston, New York, Virginia and most recently Nashville, TN. These travels have not only served as a source of growth for Fowler as an individual, but have inspired much of the music that he writes. Using train services like Amtrak rather than driving himself, Fowler is transfixed by the ability to hop on a train and completely change the world around you. Meeting new people, seeing new places, experiences that are unique to that certain location.
In his early education, Fowler was introduced to the upright bass during one of his music classes in PA. Fast forward and Noah is introduced to the world of fiddle music on Prince Edward Island. Finally he finds himself at the Berklee College of Music and he is playing in one of their bluegrass ensembles. All of these influences and worlds of experience have crafted a well rounded sound in Fowler’s music. Enriched with the spirit of collaboration and tinged by folk roots – such as a memory of his grandmother singing the classic gospel hymn “I’ll Fly Away”. These themes are ever present on Fowler’s latest release, the 8-track Gone Again, released this past Friday. The type of album you want to queue up during a debaucherous night out with friends, sharing old stories and making new ones.
At the beginning of the Coronavirus Pandemic, Fowler – still an active Berklee student – was abruptly sent home from the dorms. Through travelling back and forth between Nashville and Allston, the album was finished. Hosting fourteen musicians in total, Gone Again serves as a kind of memory book of all the faces and places that offered up inspiration. In fact the house in which Fowler & Co. worked on the album was also the location of one of his most memorable house shows. “Where all that great energy [was]… where else could have had that magic? It was there, in the walls and in the musicians,” recounts Fowler.
Finishing the album in Rockport, MA this past April, focus has shifted from production to performance, as shows have begun to open up again and musicians are finally heading back out on the road. Playing recently at The Bebop in Boston, Fowler hopes to continue booking shows through the rest of the year. Inspired by some of his favorite musicians, Fowler cites a “boots on the ground” approach to getting exposure rather than focusing too hard on social media. And with the world finally reopening, it’s time to get back out there and keep stomping.
