PHOTOS: A Night to Remember with Charly Bliss and Death Cab for Cutie

Indie power pop quartet Charly Bliss played a high-energy opening set on night two of Death Cab for Cutie’s (DCFC) run at the Boch Center last week. Despite performing for a relatively small crowd at the large venue, the band was still able to energize fans and first-time listeners alike. Throughout their half hour set, Charly Bliss frontwoman Eva Hendricks belted out songs such as “Ruby” and “Glitter,” commenting on the juxtaposition between her vulgar lyrics and the undeniable beauty of the Wang Theatre. But the most impressive part of the performance was the band’s mismatched lineup: when lead guitarist Spencer Fox had to leave the tour, a friend of the band stepped in on bass, while usual bassist Dan Shure took over lead guitar.

By the time DCFC took to the stage, the theater had filled in considerably, albeit not to full capacity. The moment they started playing, a dazzling light show began, which didn’t end until after the band walked off stage nearly two hours later. Impressive lighting aside, DCFC played a beautifully flowing set, opening with their latest hit “I Dreamt We Spoke Again” off Thank You For Today, while perfectly balancing classic songs from older albums such as Plans and Transatlanticism to keep both old and new fans satisfied. Their performance had no noticeable hitches until one man decided to yell at Ben Gibbard during “I Will Follow You Into The Dark,” arguably one of the most tear-jerking songs ever written, leading the formerly crying audience to burst out laughing. The laughter died down during the instrumental part, but returned when Gibbard skillfully continued into the next verse as if nothing had happened. If anything, this minor hiccup gave attendees–––and Gibbard himself–––something unique to remember the show by.
