On March 2, Brighton Music Hall’s sold out show featured a bill of three amazing bands who all played more than memorable performances.
Despite being on the second to last show of their North American tour, Scottish four piece The Spook School didn’t show the slightest hint of exhaustion throughout their set. While The Spook School’s songs were bright and upbeat for the most part, the band didn’t shy away from covering more serious, and sometimes dark, subject matter. Their onstage energy was stellar, making it the kind of show you can’t help but dance to. Part of this energy came from the group’s between-song-banter, much of which was led by drummer Niall McCamley. Despite being positioned furthest from the crowd, McCamley was never at risk of being overshadowed by his bandmates, easily capturing the attention of the audience from the back of the stage with his witty commentary. Overall, The Spook School put on an unforgettable performance for existing fans and first time listeners alike.
Following The Spook School’s opening performance was Seattle five piece, Great Grandpa. Fans of last year’s Plastic Cough were happy to hear many of the songs from the record incorporated into the set. In addition to playing a good set, Great Grandpa’s performance stood out because of their respect for the crowd, as they actively looked out for members of the audience and fostered a feeling of mutual respect, making sure that everyone was having a good time. Other highlights from the performance came from singer Alex Menne’s antics, as he took center stage, swaying back and forth throughout the set and delivering some outstanding lead vocals.
Headlining the gig was Diet Cig, playing the tour as a four piece with Karli Roberts-Helm of Plush on synth, The Spook School’s Anna Cory on bass, and both helping with vocal harmonies. Singer and guitarist Alex Luciano was another attention grabber for the audience with her signature power kicks and twirls. The night ended with a charming onstage moment where members from all three bands joined Diet Cig on stage, closing the show with a stage packed full of talented musicians, all genuinely loving what they were doing.
