Last week, Post Animal headlined a show at Great Scott to close out the month of May, supported by Colin Caulfield (of DIIV) and Paul Cherry. Despite stretching late into the night, Post Animal’s set had the crowd electrified from start to finish.
Though seemingly mellow in comparison to Post Animal’s closing set, both opening bands had most of the room dancing from beginning to end. Caulfield’s set in particular stood out, as he pulled a member of the crowd on stage to dance with him, and later passed his phone around the room to let spectators wish his mother a happy birthday via Facetime while he performed. Next up, Paul Cherry and his backing band showed off some laid back songs held together by multiple synths, smooth guitar riffs, and funky bass lines.
Despite the crowd’s approval of both openers, it was clear from the moment that Paul Cherry finished his set that they had turned out for Post Animal. Cheers that started during soundcheck only got louder as the band began to plan, and louder yet between songs. The room moved up and down as fans jumped around, and a pit formed in the middle of the room for a majority of the set (with two less than successful crowd surfing attempts). Saving fans the trouble of having to call them back on stage for an encore, the band stayed set up and took a brief break before launching into their three closing songs.
