Two-tone ska band The English Beat (known in England as simply The Beat) played the Sinclair on Saturday night, in a lineup dubbed “The English Beat starring Dave Wakeling,” which featured the band’s founder and original vocalist. Throughout the night, The Beat played many of their classic hits, including “Twist and Crawl,” “Mirror in the Bathroom,” and “Save it For Later,” all of which drew positive reactions from the crowd. Despite their various ages and experience levels, the band was tight, sounding as close to the original lineup as fans could hope for with a band whose lineup has take on many forms throughout the years.
Yet in spite of Wakeling’s strong stage presence, secondary vocalist King Schascha stole the spotlight after performing with both The Beat and in impromptu set with opener DJ Panda after Ghost Town Steppas cancelled last minute. A relatively new addition to the band whose job is technically “toaster,” Schascha played the role of The Beat’s MC in addition to providing additional vocals. He had no trouble bringing the crowd—primarily made up of middle aged couples—to a level of heightened energy that matched the band’s dynamic performance.
