Originally hailing from Morocco, Nora Toutain is the latest artist making waves in Montreal’s thriving R&B scene. While she’s been biding her time working on a full-length release, she has dropped a handful of singles and started making connections with her peers in Montreal. Now, she’s adding to her repertoire of released music with the new single “Women.”
As the title suggest, the single is a celebration of women, not just limited to those in Nora Toutain’s personal circle. Produced by Chris Vincent (Busty and the Bass), it’s got a driving, funky groove, with a bouncy rhythm guitar stutter that brings to mind the alternative funk of Hiatus Kaiyote.
To go along with “Women,” Nora is releasing an attached music video. In the video for the track – an assembly of DIY footage taken from Nora’s last summer in Morocco – we see the singer laughing, dancing, singing, and celebrating with a group of other women. The video also offers a unique glimpse into Moroccon culture, scenery, and daily life. It’s hard not to smile at the footage of these women smiling and laughing, a pleasant reminder of the simple joy of communing with loved ones.
While she was completing a songwriting residency at the Banff Centre of the Arts, the COVID-19 lockdown protocols went into affect. This also delayed the release of her upcoming album, Grounding Place Vol. I. The LP, which will showcase the singer’s affinity for reimaging retro sounds of R&B, soul, jazz, and funk, is now due to release later this fall.
