PREMIERE: Sports Coach – “Going Away” Video

Youth-ball. Nickelback. What? These words and many more can be used to describe the one and only Sports Coach, whose fuzzy, sleepy noise pop is anything but athletic. This is keeping in pace with Thatcher May of Sports Coach, whose preponderance of slacker culture shines through in his new video for “Going Away”, a single off an upcoming album titled it’ll all be ok for you soon.

May created the video in collaboration with his friend Benjamin Wiseman. The concept for the “Going Away” video began as a documentary-style, following a young boy who’s just received a sports scholarship. The video was meant to jump forward in his college career, showcasing his now out-of-shape self losing steam and passion for sport. Apropos for Sports Coach–and yet, what ended up happening was May and Wiseman “kind of just [pretending] to work out.” So it goes.

Clocking in a mere second over the coveted time: 4:20, the video is almost a complete rejection of fitness, featuring the men noshing away at junk food while passively watching a baseball game. (Go Sox.) An almost two-minute-long intro brings us to a valiant attempt of a montage of May trying to get his pillow-stuffed-shirted body in shape. Echoing vocals and frenzied guitar bring the short tune to a close–“Going Away” is jam-packed with all the energy his overweight character wishes he had.

it’ll all be ok for you soon will be out, appropriately, soon, via Citrus City. Until then, check out the video for “Going Away” below, and before you go away, go shoot some hoops. May gives basketball this rating: “10/10 would play again.”
