If you’ve ever made it out to Salem, MA, you’d find yourself surrounded–whether you like it or not–by the mystical and magical history that has its roots in the bewitched town. Quickly gaining a reputation for producing the likes of Pile, Krill, and other post-punk groups that have garnered a cult-like following for their campy, creepy, careless music, the Boston scene shows no signs of stopping. Rather, it’s gaining momentum, with angst-ridden SUPERTEEN to show for it.
Hailing from Salem, they pull from the town’s rich history and integrate that foreboding feeling you get stumbling through the cobblestoned streets, passing centuries old and allegedly haunted homes into their sound. Vocalists Sam Robinson and Meryl Schultz unite their echoing voices in a graceless duet that complements the thick, velvety instrumentation underneath it.
Having one full length under their belt–2013’s sensational Exponential SUPERTEEN—Stay Creepy comes as SUPERTEEN’s sophomore release, with clear signs of growth. Layering on dueling, psychedelic guitar riffs, the LP is relentlessly loud. Where Exponential was haunting in its bare-bones songs, Stay Creepy doesn’t leave out a thing, creating an awesomely unsettling cacophony that emulates the chaos within the songwriters’ minds. “Live Squid” is a single off of the album, offering frenetic drums and vocals that build on top of one another until the song is bursting at the seams.
