A perfect storm is a-brewin’ and getting ready to hit Great Scott on June 2nd. It’s not enough that Designer is releasing a dope new 7”, they’re throwing one hell of a show to celebrate. Designer will be joined by Gym Shorts, Nice guys, and Speed Trials for a night of rockin’ and rollin’ and everything in between. Not familiar with the line up? Don’t freak out, we got you covered.
If you haven’t given Designer a listen yet, now’s the time. These Bufu Records golden boys have brought album after album of quality rock, and show no signs of stopping. Designer recently put out a music video to accompany the new 7” which is available for your viewing pleasure over here. The new release is a collaboration between hometown heroes Bufu Records and New Orleans based Community Records. Designer is a force of nature- they take punk and mold it into a new kind of creature with sounds and effects that get your head spinning and your feet moving.
Surf Punk dream team Gym Shorts has some exciting things on the horizon as well, including a string of shows in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, And Baltimore. Check out their facebook for more info and updates, they’re folks you’re gonna want to keep an eye on. Boston favorite Nice guys have become a staple of sorts at Allston rock shows and they fit the Designer release show’s bill to a tee. We’re lucky we don’t have to go on a Jamacian Vacation to experience their energetic garage punk performances in person. Also, a heads up, one of their cats is missing so keep an eye out.
Lowell garage rock group Speed Trials is also coming out to ring in the new Designer release. Speed Trials may not always bring the same noisy punk vibe as the other bands that night, but they’re not to be missed. Their new release “I’ve Stopped Waiting” showcases their ability to take fuzzy garage songs, melt them with the delicateness of indie pop, and garish them with a dark vibe that sticks with you.
Designer is exactly the kind of band that is worth celebrating. Not only are their songs fantastic, but they embody some of what makes the Boston music scene so special; they’re ready to rock on any given night, they know how to work a crowd and although they’re playing on punk themes, they push the limits of how we expect punk to sound and bring their audience something unexpected and brilliant with every performance. This show is going to be a good time, and a really beautiful collaboration between several very talented local bands.
Don’t miss it.
