Who is Giraffage? Well, the extreme short answer is that he is the musical persona of one Charlie Yin. But, there’s definitely a little more than that involved. Let’s get introspective and run-down what you can expect from this artist when he drops by Brighton Music Hall this coming Thursday and throws down alongside Spazzkid and ROBOKID.

Where’s he from: San Fran of the CA variety.

More of a West-Coast mindset in his music then?: Short answer: yes. Long answer: The strength of his music lies a lot in his beats and sampling, which definitely draw from a West Coast hip-hop background. But, there’s more to it than that.

What do you mean more to it?: While prominent beats and sampling might suggest a dance-y vibe, it’s smoothed out quite a bit by a more overall ambient feel in the music. It feels a lot more like smooth jazz rather than bebop to make that comparison. Chillwave is the operative term here.

Chillwave?: Think Toro Y Moi or Washed Out.

I still don’t get it: Here. This might help.

Ohhh, I think I get it.: Good. There’s another element that Charlie brings to the table that is definitely becoming a trend in modern-day electronic artists.

What’s that?: A strong connection to the Internet-addicted, tumblr-trolling, ADD-meme culture of the modern youth.

Um, in a little less pretentious terms please?: He’s a nerd. One of those cool ones that hangs out at Newbury Comics and plays Minecraft and stuff. A lot like Baths and Anamanaguchi in that sense.

I have no idea what you’re talking about: Just watch this and then you might get it.

I think I might get it (or am just way more confused): I’m pretty sure that’s the point. It’s a pretty divisive aspect of the whole thing. But, either way, no matter how you look at it, it’s all in good fun.

How does this whole thing translate live?:

Oh man, that looks sweet.: Then maybe I’ll see you there. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
