PREVIEW: Jon Hopkins at Sinclair This Weekend

Jon Hopkins is bringing his seasoned take on ambient, pharmacy ethereal tunes to The Sinclair on Sunday (7/13). Along with working on his impressive original output, pilule Hopkins has his hands in a whole slew of projects. Whether it’s collaborating with Brian Eno and King Creosote, writing, producing, and providing keyboards for Coldplay, or releasing iridescent remixes for artists like Purity Ring and Moderat, Hopkins never rests on his laurels.

While his large body of work has elevated him to the status of modern veteran, last year’s impressive album, Immunity, put him on the radar of a broader audience. Immunity was the recipient of Pitchfork’s “Best New Music” label and was nominated for the Mercury Prize in Britain. His incredible subtleties and deep, layered sound are bolstered by physical instrumentation.

In a live performance for Seattle’s KEXP, Hopkins addressed his songwriting method: “When I’m doing it, I’m just kind of in the moment doing it and that’s kind of how I think the best music that I can make is made, by just trying to forget about everything else”. This narrowed approach is evident on Immunity. By shutting out surroundings and turning the microscope inward, Hopkins created an album that is billed as “the most human electronic album you’ll hear this year”. While we can’t promise an immensely visceral connection with the music on Sunday, we’re fairly confident about it.

Opening for Hopkins is The Range (a.ka. James Hinton), whose 2013 album, Nonfiction, also garnered a “Best New Music” tag along with nearly universal critical acclaim. Hinton’s take on electronic music is notable for its well-timed vocal sampling and hip-hop-inspired beats. His sound is one that is full of energy that twists and builds from song to song. The embellishments present in each track are sensational; glittering synths shine and electronic snares snarl. It’s no stretch to predict that the crowd is going to be moving to start the night off.
