Local and AP-fav four-piece psych indie-rock band Quilt is playing a free show this weekend with the Boston Harbor sunset as their backdrop in Piers Park as a part of ZUMIX’s Summer Concert Series. What better way to cap off your weekend than with a harbor breeze and some psych vibes to float your cares about the work week far, far away. Opening for Quilt is Miyagi and The Kids, ZUMIX’s youth rock ensemble that covers their favorites from The Rolling Stones to The Strokes.

ZUMIX is a nationally recognized youth development organization based out of East Boston that uses music as a tool for empowerment for young people ages 7-18. Miyagi and The Kids is an ensemble that provides leadership opportunities for advanced ZUMIX youth to perform professionally around Greater Boston. Auditions are held annually and is currently Juan Gutierrez (bass), Nathan Tran-Trinh (guitar), Bethany Owens (vocals, drums), and Mario Jarjour (guitar, vocals, drums).

All of the members of Miyagi came to ZUMIX from different high schools and communities including Roslindale, Revere, West Roxbury and East Boston. But they all came with a common passion for music. For Owens it’s the perfect outlet, “I’m usually in a terrible mood, but when I come to ZUMIX the minute I sit down on the drums, or sing, or do anything musical I just feel good. I forget about everything else. I have such a good time jamming with this group, when we connect it just feels so good.”

Miyagi gave us a heads up that Sunday’s audience will be in for a completely fresh new set. While some of the setlist remains a secret, it will include covers from Deerhoof, The Ramones, and Mac DeMarco. Sunday is the third installment of ZUMIX’s annual Summer Concert Series that runs every Sunday night in July and August in Piers Park. For this weekend’s lineup, ZUMIX paired up with AP to co-present a night of music bridging Allston to East Boston.

See you there!
