PREVIEW: Smith & Weeden, Julie Rhodes @ Atwood’s Tavern [2/5]

smith and weeden

Well, here we are. February 2015. Standing astride the tip of time’s arrow at the peak of modern civilization… Just kidding. It’s apparently the end of days in the form of civil and mass transit mismanagement and/or the rise of mutant confetti snowbank people. Fear not, though, good reader! The victory parade is over. The suburban mob has retreated, leaving our trains and buses available for normal-level frustration.

And with this return to normalcy, we focus our attention on one particular opportunity for you to enjoy.

Tomorrow night (Thursday, February 5th) Atwood’s Tavern will play host to the twangy Americana of Providence-based  Smith & Weeden. With a self-titled EP (2011) and a self-titled full length (2014) under their belts, S&W offer a blend of driving, bluesy rock & roll and a more classic country sound. In terms of context, you could easily draw comparisons to 70’s era Rolling Stones (see: “Playing a Part”), Uncle Tupelo (see: “Sunshine”), and even Merle Haggard (see: “Drinking Through Some Issues”).

Also appearing on the bill is Somerville based blues/folk artist Julie Rhodes. Too folky to be straight up blues, and yet too bluesy to be considered folk, Julie Rhodes seems to exist with feet planted in both worlds. Her soulful vocal delivery jumps back and forth between contemplative singer-songwriter, and a raw Joplin-esque energy (whom she actually covers on her most recent EP). Also available on her bandcamp is a two track live recording from the Lizard Lounge that brought me back to listening to Eva Cassidy live recordings. Intimate, blues-tinged, and powerful.
