Preview: Thursday 1/15 – Soft Pyramids with Abadabad and Old Abram Brown at Great Scott

Soft Pyramids

What are you doing this Thursday?

::nods head and pretends to listen::

Oh, I hope she recovers.  But here’s something that would not be a waste of your time on 1/15: you know how you’re always saying you need to go to more great local shows?

Come see Soft Pyramids play at Great Scott.  I put them first in the title because I’ve seen them the most and can vouch for their tight dark-but-hook-filled pop.  They were also on our October mixtape for their song “Hands over Mouths,” so this isn’t an empty endorsement.  Tight erratic rock that I think is very reminiscent of The Walkmen.  I told them this and they didn’t hear it, but maybe they should listen to more Walkmen.  Two times they have been the highlight of shows with really strong bills.  They’re going to have to really bring their A-game on Thursday to keep that record, because…

Your good friends Abadabad are also playing and they get second billing because I saw them once.  I just had to reread my review because I couldn’t remember if I enjoyed them.  I did!  Due to my illustrative language, I was reminded of why, so now I’m even more pumped for going to this show!  They have this 50’s doo-wop sound with all of the reverb and moody waltzing, but with modern context and no crooning.  In my post I also mentioned they had a lot of talent.  What could I have meant by that?  I’m super excited to re-experience it for the first time in my amnesic mind!

I haven’t seen Old Abram Brown! Here’s my impression: nice, professional looking website that took me way too long to find their music.  But I’m thinking they will be a great fit because I also get a vibe of Walkmen, some Vamp Week, and this old Cambridge band I played with for a short time, Leisure.  All of those by the way are fucking ringing endorsements.  These guys will probably rock live.  I’m really liking this website the more time I spend on it.  It’s stop-motion animation, somebody spent a lot of time on this.  You owe them eight minutes.

You guys are great, I hope I see you there!
