On September 28th, folks of all ages trekked out to Cambridge to catch Bully & Honey Cutt at The Sinclair. Local band Honey Cutt warmed up the crowd with a collection of effervescent jams. I’ll honestly never get tired of seeing the joy on people’s faces as singer/guitarist Kaley Honeycutt exclaims ‘I got a crop top in the mail’ as the band sails through their bouncy hit ‘Weather Girl.’ The Honey Cutt set was filled with fan favorites and some sweet treats including a few new tracks that left audience members excited for the band’s next release.
As the final pieces of Chris Chew’s beautiful pink drum set left the stage and the lights shifted, Bully sauntered onto the stage. Audience members broke out into a ‘Fuck Kavanaugh’ chant in response to singer/guitarist Alicia Bognanno‘s ‘I Believe Her’ t-shirt. The band kicked things off with ‘I Remember,’ one of many standout tracks from Feels Like, and proceeded to RIP through the first chunk of their set like a kid zipping through a mound of birthday gifts.
The entire band was on point from beginning to end. I think the ‘Fuck Kavanaugh’ chant combined with the consistent rage coursing through folks’ bodies in reaction to current events translated into not only a super tight performance but also a supremely cathartic experience. As the set came to a close, Bognanno reminded folks to register to vote and then began an ‘I Believe Her’ chant as she tuned her guitar for the final songs.
Bully & Honey Cutt created an energizing space in The Sinclair that night. I’ll never forget watching Bognanno take a moment to embrace a young person in the crowd before she began another song. The warmth emitted from that 45 second hug instilled some hope in myself and probably many other audience members.
September 28th was truly a night of release; a freeing night that’ll stick with people for years to come.
