REVIEW: Snail Mail at The Sinclair (12/1)

Saturday night Baltimore artist, Snail Mail, played two sold out shows at The Sinclair. Due to high demand for tickets, The Sinclair arranged back to back shows to accommodate fans.

Snail Mail, aka Lindsey Jordan, has accomplished a lot in her 19 years. This year alone she released her debut album, toured multiple continents, and amassed a range of publicity and acclaim. Her success isn’t surprising considering the debut album Lush is considered one of 2018’s best. Lush is a thoughtful album that finds its strength in honest lyrics and interesting guitar melodies. The beauty of the album is how Jordan’s lyrics both transcend her youth and reveal it, sometimes even in the same song. Although more polished than her EP, the record still maintains a DIY charm about it.

The night kicked off with Why Bonnie hailing from Austin, Texas. Bedroom pop vibes and shoegaze guitars got the crowd moving and made for a dreamy set. Soon after, Jordan came on stage to an eager crowd. It’s clear that Jordan, even this early on, has already managed to secure a devoted fan base. Aware of this, she took time between songs to interact with fans and profess her gratitude. During a particularly sweet moment, she recognized two fans in the front row that had been at the previous night’s show in Jersey City.

A highlight of the night was watching Jordan, a classically trained guitarist, effortlessly finger pick throughout ‘Let’s Find An Out’, a song with country influences that showcase her writing range. Overall she came across as incredibly earnest and vulnerable, making for an intimate performance. Her vocals were rife with angst that brought her raw and reflective lyrics to life. The last song of the night, ‘Anytime’ left Jordan alone on stage for a fitting personal and self-aware close.
