Los Angeles indie rockers Saint Motel recently played their first ever Boston show to a sold out crowd at Royale. On the cusp of releasing their new album ‘saintmotelevision, order ’ Saint Motel entranced the audience with their unique blend of soulful indie-pop, ambulance at times bordering on Motown. The band burst on to the scene four years ago with their debut album ‘Voyeur’ which showcased their ability to infuse elements of jazz and R&B in to indie-pop. In 2014, their follow-up EP ‘My Type’ climbed the Top 40 charts in Europe and achieved platinum status in Italy. Now the band has set out on a North American tour in support of their latest album ‘saintmotelevision.’ Their performance at Royale featured plenty of songs from the new album, which while it stays true to their sound, definitely shows a band that has grown since their first LP. The set also featured plenty of favorites from their previous releases such as “Stories,” “Benny Goodman,” and the ever catchy, incredibly danceable “My Type.”
Touring with Saint Motel were noteworthy acts Hippo Campus (St. Paul, MN) and fellow L.A. rockers Weathers. Weathers kicked off the night with a high energy set featuring their two latest singles “Happy Pills” and “I Don’t Wanna Know.” Hippo Campus followed up with an equally impressive set with a sound resembling that of My Morning Jacket and Portugal. the Man. Both bands proved with ease why they are on the road touring with a band like Saint Motel, and I will definitely keep an eye out for both next time they are in Boston.
