Over the weekend, (Sandy) Alex G stopped in Boston and performed in support of their new album, House of Sugar. They were joined for the night by openers Indigo De Souza and Tomberlin, making for a well rounded bill.
Indigo De Souza prefaced their set by informing the audience that they would be playing quieter than they normally do. But despite this warning, the band’s music remained energetic, and the softer than usual songs segued nicely into Tomberlin’s performance. Placed center stage and sometimes only accompanied by an acoustic guitar, Tomberlin played a strong set, including a surprise appearance by Boston’s Squirrel Flower on vocals.
After Tomberlin, (Sandy) Alex G shifted smoothly into their set with the instantly recognizable “Gretel,” one of the first singles from their newest album. But fans heard more than just songs from House of Sugar that night, as the band played a variety of tracks from their expansive catalogue including “Brick,” “Bug,” and “Bobby.” During “Brite Boy” (and several other songs), Tomberlin retook the stage to contribute guest vocals. After briefly leaving the stage, the band came back out for an extended encore, fielding requests from the audience. The last trio of songs included “Icehead,” “Change,” and “Harvey,” all of which garnered great reactions from the crowd.
