Last Thursday, Los Angeles’ French Vanilla was slated to play at alongside Shopping at Great Scott, but due to unforeseen travel problems the band was unable to make it to Boston in time to perform. Despite this last minute change to the bill, the show remained a great way to kick off the weekend a bit early, with a familiar local face filling in the vacant set.
First up was French Vanilla’s last minute fill in, Melissa Weikart, a singer, songwriter and pianist who’s been on a spree of performances since the release of her EP Coffee last December. The only solo artist of the night, Melissa’s set was a more laid back way to start the show than it would have been with French Vanilla, but her breathtaking performance more than made up for this change of pace.
Following Melissa, Boston trio halfsour brought an energetic indie rock set to the stage, with all of the members wearing matching Saratoga Race Course t-shirts. The show was one of their first with new drummer, Travis Hagan, who played well with his new bandmates. As a result of this fresh roster, halfsour’s set was comprised of newer material, and their songs created a playful atmosphere in the room that helped segue into the evening’s final act.
Headlining the night were UK post-punks, Shopping. Throughout their set, Shopping dripped with raw and contagious energy, bringing the crowd to life. People who’d previously been lingering around corners or back in the shadows of Great Scott surged forward, tightly packing floor of the small venue. In addition to dancing both on and off stage, Shopping’s performance included multiple tambourine hand-offs to audience members, new material, and vocals from all three members of the trio.
