This year has been a great one for photography at Allston Pudding. Having come on to the team during the summer, we we’re just beginning to ramp up the team for the start of the fall. It was amazing to see such a huge response from the general public of local Boston photographers that were interested in shooting for us. Soon the team kept building until we had a solid 20 or so people on board. From my limited experience so far as Photo Director, the one thing I can say is that the staff at AP is like nothing you’ve ever seen before. It’s full of quirky, unique, hilarious people who like to enjoy awesome local music and good times. The photo team is no exception to that. Through their hard work we’ve been able to pair more reviews with photos, produce more photo features, and generally add more imagery to our content. While the writing at AP is one of the greatest parts of the blog, they do say photos speak a thousand words. With all those words, I think AP is growing stronger daily. And if you think this was a good year, just you wait for 2015.
AP is all about supporting local artists. That being said, we’d like to promote some of our own. Here’s to a trip down 2014’s memory lane in photos. Take a look at the art, check out the photographer’s websites and support them. We want you to appreciate them as much as we do.
Cheers to a new year!

Allston Pudding’s Best Photos of 2014
Sam Herring of Future Islands. Boston Calling, September 2014
I’ve seen or heard of Future Islands before their set that day, but they ended up being the most unique band I caught during the entire festival. I even ended up including their latest record in my personal top 10 releases of 2014. During their set, Sam would be frantically dancing and jumping around the stage at one point, and at another he would pick up a piece of dust on the stage and pretend to sing to it as if he was giving it a private performance.

Magic Man. Paradise, October 26th
Despite all of the screaming girls pushing me and their parents watching over them, I managed to snap a few photos of Magic Man during their set at Paradise.

Imelda May. Paradise, July 31st
Although shooting bigger venues with a designated photo pit is nice, what I like about shooting at the Paradise is that you can get right up close to the stage. You have to get there early, and there’s a lot of standing around time, but you can see and shoot some really good bands at the ‘Dise.

Panda Bear. Paradise, September 19th
Panda Bear killed it at the Paradise last summer, the lights and music matched with the abstract visual display typical of Panda Bear added so much to the performance I wanted to try to capture that as well in my pictures. The double exposures allowed me to balance the beauty of abstraction and the beauty of reality.

Benjamin Booker. TT The Bear’s, October 22nd
When Benjamin Booker walked on stage and systematically threw back two beers in 1.5 gulps I knew he was going to go at that performance in the same style — hard. He was all over (and off) the small stage at TT the Bear’s and while his urgent, bluesy guitar playing stole the show, I think he became even more expressive during the times he set instruments aside. The light at TT’s was unexpectedly working in my favor that night, and I’d later describe the experience as a whole as a ‘photographer’s dream.’

Doug Tuttle. Great Scott, November 14th
Doug Tuttle throws a tantrum and ends his set with a 15 minute metallica-esque version of “Turn This Love” at Great Scott.

Phantogram. House Of Blues, June 21st
Sarah’s singing was airy and making me wanna cry but the duo got me when they talked about one of their first shows here at Great Scott.

Robert Delong. Great Scott, December 17th
Great Scott is a challenging venue to shoot but I love the atmosphere and some of my favorite shots have come from shows there. Robert Delong has enormous production that felt a bit cramped in the tiny venue, but his joystick-wielding millenial-rockstar nature materialized all the same.

Rodrigo y Gabriela. The Orpheum, October 29th
I’m a sucker for good lights and I love this Rodrigo y Gabriela image for the lighting and composition.

King Tuff. The Sinclair, October 10th
King Tuff absolutely slays it at The Sinclair. This man rocks, period.

The Front Bottoms. House of Blues, June 29th
Hard to beat catching my favorite band with (inexplicably) no competition in the photo pit! I’ve seen TFB more times than I can accurately remember, but it was a special treat to hear them revisit old songs like “Jim Bogart” in support of the Rose EP.
