2020 has been a busy year for Divine Sweater — after recording and releasing two singles and a social distance music video, tomorrow this Boston indie band is releasing their third single, “A Different Gravity,” a song that the band says is the best one they’ve released to date.

This song may be new to us, but Divine Sweater has had this song in their concert setlist for years. “A Different Gravity” was written by guitarist Sean Seaver and his brother before Divine Sweater was formed, making this “new” single their oldest. Being the oldest song in their catalog, it’s a song that long time Divine Sweater fans recognize and identify with. “When we would play this song at shows, people would come up to us after our set and talk to us about it because, lyrically, it’s clear and relatable,” lead singer Meghan Kelleher says.

“And what’s a dollar bill? What does it really buy? Can it cordon off the terror that we’re really all alive?”

Because they’ve been playing this song for a while, Divine Sweater says that contrary to the emotions the song evokes, there wasn’t a lot of second-guessing and self-doubt when it came to playing and recording this song. “It’s a piece of work that I stand by,” guitarist Sean Seaver says, “This song is one of our best because, from a songwriting perspective, it’s closer to poetry.” “A Different Gravity” chases that all too familiar feeling of self-doubt in what can feel like an impersonal society that puts too much value in the monetary worth of everything. This feeling of self-doubt is especially prominent within the indie music community, where “making it” can feel like a pipe dream. “We’ve been making music for a while, and there’s a lot of barriers to entry that the song talks about,” Sean says. While this song will resonate within the music community, it will be relatable to anyone who is struggling to make their passion a full-time gig.

Every one of Divine Sweater’s songs is a work of art, but undeniably, their newest single is the opus magnum of their entire discography. The implementation of the cello was a surprising twist for Divine Sweater that complemented the tight harmonies and made the song even more emotional to listen to.

Pro Tip: “A Different Gravity” is best listened to while stargazing outside the city. This song is a great way to reflect on your own self-doubts and realize that you’re not alone in this. Even the most confident among us are scared, dumb, and wishing they were someone else, as this song suggests. It’s best to understand these self-doubts and pursue what you want to achieve despite them. Keep pushing, and you will be able to achieve anything you set your mind to.
