FEATURED: EMPRESS EFFECTS – “Tape Delay”
The Echoplex and Space Echo, quintessential tape delays, known for warm echo/delay effects, adding luscious atmosphere and depth to many recordings. Runaway spaceship sounds and idiosyncrasies that occurred as the magnetic tape gradually wore out add to the allure. Replicating that analog ‘awesome’ has always posed a challenge for digital delay units. It takes more than a clever algorithm and fancy circuitry to best the sound of the real thing.
Empress Effects, from Ottawa Canada, have captured the nuanced warmth of a vintage tape delay, then married it to the extensive possibilities of digital manipulation. Quickly dial in a classic echo or explore a variety of advanced (yet surprisingly easy to master) settings. Empress has given the player control of tape age, modulation, and a high/low pass filter. Although lacking expression pedal control it does feature tap tempo. The ratio can be set for fast delays or triplet phrases, selectable between true bypass and buffered bypass (for delay trails) and saves up to three favorite settings. Finally, the soft touch footswitches eliminate “pop” when turning the effect on/ off. Not recommended for someone’s first foray into delay but perfect for those seeking the sound of a vintage delay without being bound by vintage limitations.
Space for these events is limited so reserve your spot now!
