TIFFY Balances Bad Feelings with Sugary Sparkle in “Don’t Wanna Talk”

Tiffany Sammy really believes in pop music. On a recent collection of covers, the Boston-based musician who makes music as TIFFY, pays equal respect to The Beach Boys and The Cranberries. “I grew up on pop music. It makes me happy listening to radio hits from the ‘60s to the ‘90s,” she says. Sammy has cut her teeth playing bass in a slew of local bands before stepping out on her own. Now, she’s shared her latest single, the guitar-pop anthem, “Don’t Wanna Talk.”

The lyrics came to Sammy after she took a walk in Davis Square to process a number of changes to her life, including a breakup. The song is about the limbo of connection: wanting to reach out without being seen as needy, wanting to have a serious conversation when the other person just keeps slacking you off. As a true student of pop, Sammy knows how to counterbalance bad feelings with the musical equivalent of cotton candy. The music adds a sugary sparkle to the dour subject matter; guitars and GameBoy synths shimmer while Sammy waxes about life seeming to pass her by.
