The ensemble cast that makes up Massachusetts’ Van Buren record collective have been setting 2019 ablaze so far, with releases like Lord Felix‘s EP Ultraviolet and full-length In Bloom, Forever, as well as 2 Sides from Luke Bar$ and Jiles. Add to that ‘NineFour, the EP Meech released back in April, and it’s clear why the hype surrounding Van Buren – as a collective and as talented individuals – is bubbling in their home state, and no doubt will continue beyond.

To keep riding the wave of ‘NineFour, Meech is releasing a video to accompany his track “MBS,” an abbreviation for “Mind Body Soul.” The video, directed by Fufunsoup and shot at the Tower Hill Botanic Gardens in Boylston, MA, features the rapper finding his way alone in the woods, overlooking scenic vistas of forest landscapes. It’s got an introspective, searching feel, that the artist came out there to be surrounded by nature.

As Meech lays bars over the beat (produced by D’Artizt) that really drill at communication; the opening line, “Talk to me, I wanna feel your vibe,” evolve from verbal communication to a more expansive, metaphysical one. His verses throw references to dancing, trust issues, trusting one’s gut, social media, and sex. These are all arenas where communication – or road blocks to such – play key roles. There’s a certain sense of completion to achieving communication on to this degree of total unity between mind, body, and soul, and that’s played off of the choice of delivering a video that features a lone person amid a sea of thoughts in the woods. It’s those quiet moments to ourselves where we can figure out how best to be present for those others in our lives.
