You Oughta Know: Toby Fox

Every Friday, we’re here to remind you of the Boston artists we love and think you oughta know.

With the massive amount of time I spend in front of a computer sending off emails or doing chores around the house, I need background noise that’ll propel me through the not so riveting aspects of adulthood.Video game soundtracks have been a saving grace and have truly increased my work-week productivity. While my go-to is always a soundtrack from Sonic the Hedgehog, I decided to search for a video game soundtrack by a local artist. Enter: Toby Fox, the creator of the beloved RPG Undertale.

The basic summary of Undertale is that you play as a child who falls to the Underground(a subterranean world of towns and caves) and must make their way back to the surface. Along the way you come in contact with monsters and other obstacles that make the trek to the surface a challenging and exhilarating experience. The soundtrack that Fox crafted for the game holds all the excitement and whimsy that makes this RPG so enjoyable. Over the course of 101 tracks, Fox takes his audience on an auditory enterprise that is bound to make any listener feel that their personal trek to the surface is a conquerable feat.

The soundtrack is a captivating balancing act; holding space for dulcet tracks such as “Home” & “Quiet Water” as well as punchy, ~boss-fight~ tracks like “Song That Might Play When You Fight Sans” & “Death By Glamour.”

Give Toby’s work a listen and if you’re interested in seeing how the music lines up with game-play or wondering if Undertale is the game for you, peep some of the play-through below!
