Folktronic duo Skinny Bones has been heavily circulating Greater Boston all year. If you haven’t stopped by a show in a while, now is the time.
Jacob Rosati (guitar, keys, vox) and Chris Stoppiello (drums, recorded sounds) have now expanded their set with a preview of new material they’ve been working on. Until now, Skinny Bones has been standing by their first release Skinni Dip (June, 2013) with favorites like “Shake Your Shoulders” and “Undress”.
Rumor has it we’ll have a new EP from them shortly after the new year with a whole new sound. This weekend O’Briens was treated to a taste of new material with a track entitled “Wanderlust.” Rosati says the track is about focusing on where you are in life and appreciating it rather than
daydreaming elsewhere. The first time I heard “Wanderlust” when the duo opened for indie rock veterans Islands last month, I was speechless.
Previously Skinny Bones has been known for the duo’s whimsical nature with water bottles taped onto Stoppiello’s kit and Rosati singing into the belly of his guitar. The new material hints at a heavier tone and a wealth of evolution for what Skinny Bones is helping “folktronic” to become. Rosati and Stoppiello are unafraid to play with sound and push themselves to explore new territory. That’s what makes them a pleasure to watch.
“Wanderlust” is where Wilco circa 2002 and The Books meet (instead of found cassette tapes, clanking dishes and rushing water are sampled). It’s clear that influence is stemming from artists like The Books and Nicolas Jaar – and if “Wanderlust” is any indication, this new record is going to be dynamic growth for the duo.
You can catch Skinny Bones at the Lilypad this Sunday, November 24 presented by our good friends over at Boston Hassle. You can take a piece of Skinny Bones history home with you too. In lieu of physical CDs the band sells personal Polaroids with digital download codes based on the good ol’ Pay-What-You-Want system. Also on the bill: Advance Base, Hello Shark, and Kingsley Davis – it’s a Sunday night, you won’t regret it!
