Speedy Ortiz Turn Free Music Into A $1k Donation To Ferguson

Speedy-Ortiz-191

In the wake of recent events in Ferguson, MO, hundreds of people took to the streets to protest the decision not to indict officer Darren Wilson. Many businesses in the area were affected by these protests, one of them the Ferguson Public Library.

In an act of big-heartedness and defiance for Black Friday, local sweethearts Speedy Ortiz decided they’d be putting up their first two releases for free.

However, in the spirit of consumerism and undying support, fans still took it upon themselves to pay. Racking up a few hundred dollars in just a day, Speedy Ortiz was floored. They turned their fans’ generosity into donations for the Ferguson Public Library, dedicating any further profits to the cause.

Over the course of three days, the band raised around $1,000- all donated to the library. They’ve since pulled The Death Of Speedy Ortiz and Cop Kicker from their bandcamp, but they encourage anyone still interested in donating to go directly through the library. This incredible charity from music consumers comes as an ironic, yet refreshing twist in a time where pirating and streaming music has become commonplace, forcing music sales to decrease.

If Speedy’s kindness has inspired you, you can catch them at Great Scott starting this weekend for their holiday residency. They recently announced their lineup, which features a super special secret guest each night of their residency. Be sure to snag tickets before they’re all gone!
