My, “I’m going to see Deerhoof next week,” has been almost exclusively met with jubilant expletives. The San Francisco quartet has garnered a mighty reputation since 1994 with their brand of punk rock. Deerhoof was birthed by and banks on our desire for french fries dipped in milkshakes. On paper it doesn’t add up, but it sure as shit feels good going down. Their latest release, La Isla Bonita, at it’s core is just a bunch of dance grooves cradled in hard noise.
Twenty years into their career, the quartet’s sound remains fresh as ever. La Isla Bonita will get your hips shaking with the gritty funk of “Paradise Girls” before getting you sheepishly laughing to yourself when vocalist and bassist Satomi Matsuzaki sings about being overwhelmed by too many choices on the breakfast menu on “Exit Only.” Deerhoof is a fearless band who’s always up to dance with you. Lucky for Boston, they’ll be gracing the Paradise Rock Club tomorrow night alongside theatrical art rockers of Montreal and Yonatan Gat (named “Best Guitarist of 2013” by The Village Voice).
3 Reasons To Be There, Or Be Square
1. A fan of Perfect Pussy? Meredith Graves digs the ‘hoof and raves about their live shows. By the transitive property, you gotta get to the ‘hoof. Check out this Perfect Pussy remix of “Exit Only.”
2. Drummer Greg Saunier pushes himself to the LIMIT.
3. This is your chance to be supportive and save Satomi from impatient hecklers.
